There have been plenty of endeavours to bring back hard rock into the main scene by new formations. To play the same catchy, melodic rock music that was so popular in the '70s, but nearly all tryings ended up with too evident references and too strong influences, that made the bands the copies of some of the big 4. Recalling the golden age by pasting it's essence into nowadays modern sound is something that not many tried or succeeded with. This way the feeling of course isn't exactly the same, but could be easier to go into for newer generations.
Ghost debuted as a very interesting band by chosing this path. Their music was soft, even radio compatible, except the occult and satanic lyrics, that sounded amusing and weird the same time with this musical background. They've also proved that it's not really necessary to follow extreme tendencies to create a blasphemous concept. Melodic, catchy style, stage appearence that suggests preparings for a satanic ceremony and clear singing the message of the Dark Lord to be understandable for everyone proved to be enough. Maybe it's also a more effective way to gather masses of people and to convert them to the dark side. But this concept wasn't new either, a less known band named Coven also did something similar on their debut in their time the '70s, and probably their music could have been inspiring for Ghost. However, the band had unique approach by covering topics that are more usual to find in extreme metal. And being able to reach such a big audience by hard rock without becoming a simple nostalgia band needs skilled musicians. Such a thing didn't happen in hard rock since decades, and this also made the band quite exceptional.
